RML is celebrating TEENtober October 1-31, 2024 with special events and programs spotlighting all the great resources and activities available at the library and to encourage teens from around the area to read for their enjoyment.

TEENtober is a time to celebrate reading for fun while encouraging teens to take advantage of reading in all its forms —books, magazines, e-books, audiobooks and more! It is also a great opportunity to encourage teens to become regular library users.

RML invites teens, parents and other community members to participate in special programs and events during TEENtober.

  • October 1-31 Pop Culture Quizzes—Answer trivia questions for one or all of the themed quizzes for a chance to win great prizes! Prizes for the Horror Literature quiz include: Never whistle at night book and 20th century ghosts by Joe Hill; prizes for Stranger Things quiz include: Stranger Things Nestables Nesting Dolls and Eddie w/ Guitar Funko Pop; prizes for the Classic Horror quiz include: POP MART Universal Monsters Blind Box Figurine and Universal Monsters Taro Deck & Guidebook.
  • Teentober QR.pngTuesdays and Thursdays, October 1-24—Sign up for our Escape Room—participate individually or with up to three friends! Register for your session online or contact us today. Prizes for the Escape Room include: a gift certificate to Aztec Parlor and a gift certificate to Underground Escape.

Other teen programs available at Robey Memorial Library include:

  • Teen Advisory Board (TAB): TAB meets monthly from September through May. TAB members have input into book purchases, teen programming and more. TAB meetings include teen business, books & special programs. Contact Robey Memorial Library or visit https://www.waukon.lib.ia.us/services/teens for more infomation.
  • Literacy programs: Teens can participate in various reading programs to earn free books! 100 books before High School encourages 7th and 8th grade teens to read 100 books before high school with the opportunity to earn 5 free books.  Read for a Lifetime encourages teens 9th through 12th grade to continue to read for enjoyment with the opportunity to earn 4 free books

Parents of teens are also encouraged to celebrate TEENtober at home. RML offers these ideas:

  • Set aside time each day for the family to read
  • Give books or magazine subscriptions to your teen as a gift or reward
  • Share your favorite book with your teen
  • Go online with your teen to learn about new books or authors by visiting http://tinyurl.com/yalsabookawardslists
  • Host a book discussion group
  • Build an in-home library (visit our Foundation Book Sale on the third Thursday, monthly to get started)
  • Listen to audiobooks on trips
  • Create a cozy reading corner somewhere in your home
  • Use meal time to talk about books that you’re reading
  • Parents and caregivers can be role models by making time to read, too
  • Incorporate reading into teen chores, such as reading a recipe when cooking, reading instructions for how-to projects, reading sales fliers to develop a shopping list, and more

TeenTober is a nationwide celebration hosted by libraries every October and aims to celebrate teens, promote year-round teen services and the innovative ways teen services helps teens learn new skills, and fuel their passions in and outside the library.
